Belle Vue Introduction
This Design Concept Report puts forward an outline ‘in principle’ proposal for a major development in a key location of the South C area of Nairobi. It demonstrates a concept of how a major new mixed use development on a 3.98 ha site might be undertaken on the vacant Belle Vue former outdoor cinema site incorporating a major shopping mall and high quality residential apartment blocks. Other facilities on the site are also proposed including a 3 – 4 star hotel, hospital and school, together with extensive parking.
Situated close to the recently completed Nairobi Expressway and Mombasa Road that is beneath it, the site is prominently located, and therefore the proposed development has the opportunity to create an important new landmark and to advertise its presence to the passing motorist. The site is being promoted by Al Asab who are to develop it under a joint venture initiative with the landowner.

The site is situated about 2 km south of Nairobi’s Central Business District, and the proposed development site is situated immediately to the west of the Mombasa Road and the recently completed Nairobi Expressway, a elevated toll road that runs right through the central city area past Nairobi Central, Upper Hills and Westlands.
For the many travellers approaching Nairobi from the south, and especially those on the Nairobi. Expressway, the site is situated in a prominent location, clearly visible to the west of the road. In terms of raising awareness of the new Belle Vue Arch development, the site is already very visible, but to promote if fully in the public eye, the planning of the site and the architectural treatment of the buildings and their frontage will be additionally important.

The city of Nairobi is situated at a well-defined natural boundary between two very different landscapes, that indeed was the principal reason for the choice of the location. To the south-east are the wide dry open bush lands that extend south towards Athi River, Tsavo and the coast. To the north-west, the topography rises suddenly towards the dramatic Rift Valley escarpment creating a lush, forested landscape of deep fertile soils and well-defined valleys whose small streams and rivers drain out into the Athi Plains.
Inevitably, as the Nairobi Central Business District becomes more intensely developed, the areas around it also become the target of redevelopment, and this has been a feature of the northern areas for many years now. Similarly, areas to the south of the CBD have begun to change, and numerous recent and current redevelopments are to be found in the South C area, especially in the vicinity of the Mombasa Road/Southern Bypass interchange. This Belle Vue Arch proposal is therefore part of this uplift and redevelopment process.
